| Greetings from the Elementary Principal!
It is hard to believe that another school year is under way! It is so exciting to see the students return with a rejuvenated spirit ready to learn! It is too quiet here over the summer without the children, and I was starting to feel “hug-deprived!”
As you may be aware, we are in the middle of a Capital Project, and some of our classrooms have undergone a “facelift” over the summer months. Many of the students will be heading into classrooms with new flooring, a fresh coat of paint, and a new heating and cooling system. The projected date of the completion of our construction project is December, 2012.
Over the summer, the DCS teachers were involved in a great deal of professional development. Providing a quality education is our goal, and it takes a great deal of learning and planning on our part. Our main focus for this school year will be on the newly adopted Common Core Standards. Teachers will be writing curriculum, units, and assessments reflective of these new standards. It is an exciting time to be in education, as there are many positive changes that have been initiated by the New York State Education Department.
We will continue to focus on character education as well. Our STARS Committee met over the summer to plan our monthly activities and character themes for the year. We will continue to teach our students how to stand up to bullies, resolve conflicts in a positive way, and be ethical citizens of our community.
As always, please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have questions, concerns, or ideas that you’d like to share that will help make our school an even better place to learn and grow!
Happy Trails,
Laurie Hopkins-Halbert
